Alma Doepel is 108 years old in October 2011!

She has been a significant contributor to Australia's maritime history, as her history, detailed elsewhere in this website, explains.

A ship with such a wealth of maritime and social history cannot be allowed to go the way of so many others of her generation – she deserves to be preserved as a living example of a style of ship, a way of life and the commerce and coastal development of Australia.

Keep Alma Sailing

Alma Doepel can be preserved in two ways; one is as a static exhibit alongside a wharf, much as she was in Port Macquarie; the other is as a ‘living’ ship, sailing again in Port Phillip, introducing generations of young – and not so young – Australians to the skills, traditions, disciplines and pleasures of tall ship sailing.

Evidence from all around the world has demonstrated that few experiences build character and contribute more to youth and personal development than a spell in a crew aboard a tall ship.

Sail & Adventure Limited, owners of Alma Doepel have embarked on an ambitious plan to refit the ship so that she can regain her Victorian commercial (passenger-carrying) survey and, once again, earn her own keep. This will be through a program of sail training, day cruises under sail, alongside functions, and more specialised activities such as involvement in marine science programs.

How you can help

Partnerships are sought with individuals and corporates who share the aims for the future of Alma. Sponsorships by way of funding, or in kind, can help the ship sail again.

The Board of Sail & Adventure Limited and the Alma Doepel Supporters Club are actively campaigning to raise funds for the ship. If you can help, or know of someone else who might, please do one of three things:

1: To discuss sponsorship, by way of funding or in kind, contact us by email at Sail & Adventure Limited or by telephone on 0427 829 134 to arrange a meeting;

2: If you know someone else who may be able to help with sponsorship, talk to them first, then put us in touch. Email us at Sail & Adventure Limited or telephone 0427 829 134.

3: Funding Appeal for Alma Doepel restoration

Alma Doepel (1903) urgently needs restoration to return to active service in Port Phillip offering youth development programs and acting as a living museum.
Today, Alma has a rare window of opportunity; we have access to a berth for the ship, a superb workshop at Shed 2, Victoria Harbour and an experienced team of shipwrights.
A National Trust External Appeal has been established to raise funds to remove the ship from the water and to complete major hull works.

This is a major step in the fund-raising campaign for Alma's refit and to add your financial support to the restoration program please download the donation form (click here) and send your contribution to the National Trust as indicated on the form. You will receive a tax receipt from the Trust.

If you prefer, please send a cheque payable to:

"National Trust (Victoria) Alma Doepel Restoration"

and mail to:
